“In summary The British Journal of Health Psychology published an article on April 20, 2020, highlighting the increasing recognition of personalized and dignified care in healthcare, yet the oversight of the impact of hospital clothing on patient well-being. Patients often wear backless gowns during medical procedures, causing depersonalization, stigma, low status, and lack of control. Studies indicate that the current hospital gown design negatively affects patients’ well-being and psychological state, transitioning them from ‘healthy’ to ‘sick’ identity. Participants felt emotionally and physically vulnerable, exposed, and self-conscious while wearing the gown. Around 72% reported feeling exposed, 60% self-conscious, 57% uncomfortable, and 58% vulnerable in the gown.
Recommendations include redesigning the gown to be tie-sided without an open back, ensuring ease of use, warmth, better fit, and accommodation for medical equipment. The gown’s use should be limited to medical necessity, with patients changing into regular clothing as soon as possible. Alternative designs for hospital gowns have been proposed, providing solutions for users and hospitals. The study emphasizes the need to challenge existing practices and trial new designs to improve patients’ psychological experiences during hospital care. The findings underline the importance of addressing the negative impact of the hospital gown on patients’ well-being and the potential benefits of implementing more dignified and functional designs.”
